YORK City's management, players and fans will have looked at last night's Division Three results with glee as the Minstermen's main rivals struggled to make any in-roads at the top.
City position in the play-off places may have looked precarious as they had played more games than their rivals, but with the club remaining in fifth spot after last night, they have highlighted the importance of getting points in the bag.
City were given a helping hand by Cambridge, as the Us toppled toppled third-placed Bournemouth. Goals from Dave Kitson and Luke Guttride ensured that the Cherries, for whom Steve Fletcher netted, remain just a point ahead of City.
Play-off contenders Bury and Oxford had to be content with a point each from a 1-1 draw at Gigg Lane.
York-born Pawel Abbott put the Shakers one up, before Scott McNiven equalised for Oxford to leave both sides on the fringe of the top seven places.
Torquay took advantage to sneak up just behind Bury in ninth spot thanks to a last-minute winner from David Woozley in a five-goal thriller against Shrewsbury at Gay Meadow.
Earlier, Martin Gritton and Alex Russell had put Torquay in charge, with Shrewsbury levelling through Peter Wilding and Luke Rodgers.
Lincoln hauled themselves up to seventh thanks Shayne Bradley's goal in their 1-0 win over Kidderminster at Sincil Bank.
