WORK to demolish a vandal-hit eyesore in Chapelfields, York, has now been completed, housing chiefs say.
Tees Valley Housing Group and contractors Southdale Homes Ltd can now begin building work on a scheme that will provide a dozen affordable homes.
Councillor Ruth Potter, the council's executive member for housing, said: "The clearance of the site is a major milestone for the project.
"We have worked closely with local residents and councillors to gather views about how the flats, shop units, community centre and surrounding area should be re-developed.
"It is heartening that residents of all ages have shown an interest in the regeneration proposals and should share in my delight that the start of the building work is now in sight."
But York Liberal Democrat leader Coun Steve Galloway claimed that the demolition work was still incomplete.
"The council has jumped the gun in making these claims," he said.
"Residents still face the threat of bricks from the site being used as missiles."
