A NEW weapon in the fight against flooding has been unveiled by British Waterways.
The hi-tech survey boat, M.V. North Star, is fitted with a state-of-the-art surveying system.
Called the GeoScaN system, it will revolutionise the way canals, rivers and other water structures are surveyed.
It was launched yesterday at Bank's Boatyard, in Bawtry Road, Selby, by the town's MP John Grogan.
Designed over five years by British Waterways' Technical Service department, in Leeds, it is designed to offer engineers highly accurate information to assist flood prevention work.
System designer Laurence Waterhouse said: "The GeoScaN project is cutting-edge technology and we are taking out patents."
He said it would provide an early warning to avoid situations such as the floods of November 2000.
