A LONG-SERVING ambulanceman in York is to retire after 30 years in the service.
John Britton, from Riccall, near Selby, has retired from the force after celebrating his 65th birthday this week.
John said: "It's been an unbelievable job and I've loved every single minute of it.
"It's been wonderful to meet so many people, sort problems out and see the end result, which was mainly good."
John joined the service in 1972 after working for several years as a plasterer.
He had worked with the Royal Army Medical Corps during his National Service and later decided to join the service, spending most of his career at York Ambulance Station. In recent years he has been teaching first aid, but suffered a heart attack last year leading to a reduction in his duties.
He said: "When I had my heart attack it was terrible because I couldn't accept it and wanted to go back to work. But gradually my family persuaded me that I had to slow down and take it easy." John yesterday enjoyed a retirement party with former workmate Dennis Hall and more than 100 past and present colleagues.
He said: "Although I am not working for the service any more, I will still get involved in events like the Ambulance Service Christmas party for children - I definitely intend to keep in touch."
