YORK City Knights second-row forward Scott Fletcher has been named Arriva Trains Cup player of the round after his display last Sunday helped the Knights to a stunning 34-20 win over Doncaster.
It is the first time a York player has won the award in the six weeks of competition, and it will see Fletcher receive a specially designed trophy provided by tournament sponsor Arriva Trains Northern.
Fletcher, a former captain of the British Amateur Rugby League Association Great Britain side, scored a crucial try in the 56th minute after showing tremendous evasive skills, and followed that up with a slashing 40-metre break from inside his own half, which set up a touchdown for Mark Cain as York turned around a 20-8 deficit to storm to victory.
Fletcher - who was also named Knights' man of the match as part of the Evening Press/Collier Plant Hire player of the season competition - made several other telling breaks and backed up his wonderful attacking display with some sound defence.
The Knights will be looking to continue their fine form at Hull KR on Sunday, where they are likely to come up against former Wigan prop Harvey Howard.
Howard, 34 next Tuesday, has joined the Robins on a two-year contract and will also succeed Whetu Taewa as assistant to coach Steve Linnane.
