THREE young geographers from York have beaten off tough competition to win through to the finals of a national contest.
Year 11 students Kate Roberts, Jenny Rowland and Gerard Camplejohn, from Fulford School, will travel to Derby for the finals of the Geography Association Worldwise Quiz.
Their first challenge was the local round of the competition, held at St Peter's School, York, where they beat the host school's team, as well as teams from York's All Saints', Bootham and Huntington Schools, and a team from Barnard Castle.
They then travelled to Hymers College, Hull, for the regional final, where they beat three all-boy teams - the hosts, and teams from Lincoln and Nottingham.
Kate said: "The dreaded individual questions proved no barrier for my teammates and myself, and then, after receiving the lucky question topic of limestone, Fulford came through once again to show that comprehensives, and even women from comprehensives, can do well in educational competitions."
The finals take place on April 23.
