POLICE have issued a warning to residents across North Yorkshire to beware of bogus officials after an incident in Northallerton.
Two men claiming to be from Yorkshire Water persuaded an elderly woman in the Romanby area of the town to allow them into her home.
A police spokeswoman said: "Fortunately she smelt a rat before they could take anything, and she told them to leave the house. But she was shaken and very upset by the incident."
The spokeswoman added that a check with the water company revealed that no employees were in the area at that time.
Police advise residents to always check the credentials of officials on the doorstep, and to call and check with the company if they are uncertain of their identity.
