THE Lord Mayor of York, Coun David Horton, has unveiled the lift which has been installed at his official Mansion House residence as part of City of York Council's work to improve access to public buildings for disabled people.
He was joined at the event by Coun Bob Scrase, the executive member responsible for equalities issues, and Geoff Henman, an old friend of the Lord Mayor and a wheelchair user.
Coun Horton said: "It is right that the Mansion House, as a public building belonging to the citizens of York, should have full disabled access facilities to allow all to enjoy its splendour. It is also right that the city council should be leading the way in opening up its own public buildings for access by all."
The council has set aside £300,000 to carry out access audits and improvements on key buildings such as libraries, community centres and receptions to make them accessible to disabled people.
