ANGLERS in the north east have been warned to observe regulations on the region's rivers, streams and ditches when the annual coarse fish close season starts tomorrow.
However, the open season for brown trout doesn't start until March 22 on rivers from the Tees northwards and March 25 for rivers south of the Tees.
Environment Agency water bailiffs will be especially vigilant, checking rivers regularly during the close season, which runs until June 16, to safeguard fish stocks and to ensure anglers have the correct rod licence.
"Anyone caught fishing illegally can expect us to prosecute," said Environment Agency Fisheries management team leader, John Shannon.
Current rod licences expire on March 31. Fishing without a licence is an offence under the Salmon and Freshwater Fisheries Act 1975 and magistrates can impose fines of up to £3,000 and ban anglers from fishing.
Licences can be bought at any Post Office in England and Wales or directly from the Agency (0870 166 2662) or its Internet sales service at www.environment-agency.gov.uk/fish.
A full licence for non-migratory trout and coarse fish costs £22 - an increase of £1 on last season. Other prices are: Concessionary, senior and eligible disabled: £11 (50p increase); Concessionary junior: £5 (no change); Eight-Day: £7 (50p increase) and One-Day: £2.75 (25p increase)
With the rivers now out of bounds for the next three months, York anglers will be turning their attentions to still waters.
Several venues will be hosting Spring Series including Carpvale, Raker Lakes and the Willows.
Day Ticket anglers have another treat in store. Chris Jewitt has taken over the reigns at Tollerton Ponds and the lakes will be open for day ticket anglers as of tomorrow. Tickets for both ponds are priced at £6. The Front Pond houses 35 pegs and is an established mixed fishery noted foe its splendid tench. The newer Carp Lake holds 20 purpose built pegs and is a more contemporary commercial fishery brimming with a variety of carp species.
Further details can be obtained by ringing 01347 838115. Match Bookings for the 2003/2004 season are already being taken.
Jewitt is running an open match this Sunday to offering anglers an early opportunity to sample the fishery..
