HUMBERSIDE Police has slashed more than 250,000 miles of its vehicle fleet's mileage, cut fuel consumption by 10,000 litres and saved £100,000 in the last year.
The force has made the improvements under the Department for Transport's Motorvate scheme, which is aimed at helping firms to cut their fleet costs and reduce the impact of their vehicles on the environment. As well reducing mileage and fuel consumption, the force has converted the majority of its new vehicles to LPG fuel.
Alan Hocking, Humberside Police's fleet manager, said: "Implementing our new fleet policy has reduced the overall size of the fleet. Our success in reducing the environmental impact of the fleet and saving money has meant that we are now able to advise other fleet operators on these issues."
More than 30 local councils, organisations and businesses have already signed up to the Motorvate scheme. For more information, visit www.greenerfleet.org.uk.
