WHISKY drinkers in North Yorkshire have been warned against fake spirits which may contain a poisonous form of alcohol.
Fake Johnnie Walker Black Label whisky has been contaminated with methanol, a poisonous form of alcohol, with counterfeit Highland Pride Finest Scotch Whisky also thought to have been affected.
The counterfeit product can easily be distinguished from the real product, and genuine Johnnie Walker and Highland Pride are completely unaffected.
Counterfeit Johnnie Walker can be identified by fake lot code L04P24878342 being printed on the rear of the front centre label, "Distilleries" not "Distillers" is printed on the Royal Warrant, and there is no "e" mark on the base of the bottle.
Fake Highland Pride shows "1L" instead of "1 Litre", "40% vol" rather than "43% vol", and states "produced and bottled in Scotland" whereas the genuine states "bottled in Scotland".
Assistant trading standards officer Graham Venn (phone 01609 766408) said: "Any retailer or member of the public who has bought these products or suspects they are on sale should contact North Yorkshire's trading standards and regulatory services."
