A MAN whose single fundraising idea has generated more than £100,000 for St Leonard's Hospice in York is urging people to join this year's St Leonard's Way Challenge Walk.
John Riley came up with the idea of walking the 20-mile circular Pennine route in aid of the hospice in Tadcaster Road, York, in 1989.
The event has taken place every year since 1990, except 2001, when it was cancelled due to foot and mouth disease restrictions.
John, who recently retired as chaplain to York Railway Mission, now wants as many people as possible to take part in the walk on Saturday, May 3.
He said: "The walk attracts many people year after year, and they see it as a reunion, where they meet old friends.
"It's a good day out for everyone, and there's a wonderful spirit each time the Walk takes place."
Janet Morley, fundraising manager at St Leonard's, said: "John's original idea has really proved its value over the years, and we are very grateful to him for his continued support."
The entry fee of £7 per person includes full back-up throughout the day and a meal at the finish. Many participants collect sponsorship from family, friends and colleagues.
Anyone who is fit and able to walk long distances over open moorland is welcome to take part.
Under-16s must be accompanied by an adult.
