THE falcon has landed. The gilded wooden carving of the bird of prey has returned to its perch outside the former Falcon pub in Micklegate, York.

The Falcon was removed during a controversial refurbishment and change of the pub's name to Rumours.

Its disappearance irked one Evening Press reader, who wrote to the paper to complain at its loss. City of York Council also demanded it should be returned to its bracket on the wall.

Pub spokesman Arthur Swaine said the bird, removed because of fears that it might fall off its perch, had been safely fixed to the bracket again.

He also revealed that a planning wrangle over the bright green and red paint outside the pub was about to enter a new phase.

The council demanded last year that the pub should be repainted in more acceptable colours, saying the vivid new colours were out of character for a grade II listed building in a conservation area.

Mr Swaine said he and his partners had now decided to lodge a retrospective listed building application to the authority.

He claimed the colours were "quite tasteful", and reflected traditional John Smith's Brewery colours which went back 30 years or more. They had also helped attract new business and created jobs.

He said that if permission was refused, an appeal would be lodged.
