INDISCIPLINE was the downfall of New Earswick All Blacks as they followed up last week's stunning White Rose Trophy semi-final win with a 10-6 Yorkshire League division one defeat to Kinsley Raiders.
All Blacks were forced to make half a dozen changes from the team that beat leaders Batley Boys last week, while work commitments prevented former York Wasps prop Andy Precious from making his debut back at the club.
Kinsley went ahead on 22 minutes with a converted try and five minutes before half-time a penalty for obstruction made it 8-0.
All Blacks hit back with a penalty under the sticks from Ian Calpin but, after several penalties around the hour-mark, Kinsley finally converted one to restore their eight-point lead.
With eight minutes left, a fine individual try by Matt Godfrey out wide made it 10-6 but the conversion was missed and, despite late pressure, All Blacks were unable to get the winning try.
Selby Warriors were without eight regulars and their young inexperienced team should be commended despite losing 40-8 at Featherstone Lions 'A' in Yorkshire League division two.
Things looked bleak when the hosts scored two converted tries in the first five minutes but Selby fought back with Wayne Fennel racing 80 yards straight from a scrum to score wide out.
The pitch was boggy and that restricted the effectiveness of speedy half-backs Fennel and Carl Bardauskas, and they were hit again as the hosts scored two more before half-time to kill off the game.
In the second half some excellent tackling from Damon Moffat and Richard Toovey kept Featherstone at bay but despite Selby's best efforts the home team scored another four tries against a tiring defence.
The last word, however, went to Selby player-coach Kev Fellows, who rolled back the years with a kick and chase to touch down in the corner to make the score more respectable.
York Acorn 'A' returned to the field with a resounding 58-0 home win over a spirited White Hart outfit in Yorkshire League division two.
Acorn were excellent as a team, with Under-18s hooker Kevin Brayshaw, second rower Alex Benn and centre Alex Cowton to the fore.
Acorn's tries came from John Tattersfield (3), Paul Sawyer, Brayshaw (2), Matthew Embleton (2), Sam Barker, Gary Taylor, Benn and Chris Thompson, who also kicked a goal to go with four goals from Tom Galloway.
A young Heworth 'A' side put in a Jekyll and Hyde performance as they lost 52-5 at Crofton Cougars in Yorkshire League division three.
Peter Wragglesworth crossed for Heworth's consolation try, goaled by Gary Watkinson, while Kevin Gott produced another fine defensive display well supported by youngsters Dan Sinclair, Sean Brough, John Jewitt and Mark Watkinson.
