YORK swimmer Jane McDermott, competing in her last National event as a junior, went out in magnificent style by setting European and Junior National records.
Swimming at Ponds Forge in the Disability Sport England Junior National Championships, the 17-year-old won four gold and five silver medals.
She took gold in the 50metres backstroke, 100m backstroke, 100m freestyle and 100m butterfly.
She clocked 1 minute 48.50 in the butterfly to break the European record and set a new junior national record in the freestyle by slashing four seconds off her personal best to time 1-32.30.
The freestyle victory included the scalp of Welsh swimmer Liz Johnson, who is a member of the Great Britain squad.
McDermott's five silvers were all pbs and came in the 50m butterfly, 100m breaststroke, 100m individual medley, 200m individual medley and 50m freestyle, where Johnson gained her revenge by edging out McDermott by 0.1 seconds.
The next event for McDermott will be the British Open Championships in June, one of the biggest events outside the Paralympic and World Championships, where she will be hoping to do well, along with the other York swimmer Hannah Bickerdike, who will also be competing.
