A TEENAGE girl has handed herself in to police in connection with the assault of two young sisters outside a York supermarket.
Emily and Adele Westerby, aged 13 and 12, of Nun Monkton, were kicked, punched and robbed during their 20-minute ordeal at the hands of four girls late on Friday night following a trip to the cinema at Clifton Moor.
As reported in yesterday's Evening Press, their mother, Teresa Westerby, offered a £100 reward for information which helped police to identify the attackers, who struck as the girls walked from the Warner Brothers cinema to Tesco to order a taxi.
Last night, a 15-year-old girl, from New Earswick, phoned York police officers after reading the Evening Press article.
She then attended the police station with her mother at 11.30pm and handed herself in. She has been bailed to return to the police station on Friday.
Today, Teresa said it made her feel more positive that the police would complete their investigation.
She said: "I would never have expected that to happen, it was the last thing I expected. I think that's good, it makes me feel a bit more positive that this is something the police will get to the bottom of. We'll see what else happens."
A police spokeswoman said: "A girl has come in and handed herself in after reading the article in the Evening Press. She has been given police bail until the 14th."
