MYSTERIES of York Minster are to be revealed this weekend.

The technological secrets of the Minster are to be disclosed to the public as part of National Science Week.

The Centre For School Visits has organised sessions to explain the secrets of how the building, the largest Gothic Cathedral in northern Europe, was constructed.

The multi-media sessions will include the problems encountered by the medieval workmen and how they were overcome, how the 16,000 tonne central tower was saved from collapse, and why the Minster should be red. Tim O'Little, one of the teaching staff at the centre, said: "For National Science Week we decided to turn our usual sessions on their head, and let the adults in on what we tell the children the other 51 weeks a year. It's all at an adult level, but should be a real eye-opener, and has proved very popular so far."

All places have been booked up this weekend, but the sessions will also be available next Saturday. The two-hour sessions are free, by ticket only, from York Minster Centre for School Visits, 01904 557224.
