A WOMAN who went for help when her car broke down just off the A64 near Malton returned to find that her vehicle had been set on fire.

North Yorkshire Police are now seeking witnesses of the suspicious fire, which happened between 7.30pm and 8.30pm on Tuesday.

A police spokesman said the silver-coloured Peugeot 205 was travelling along the A64 at Whitwell-on-the-Hill at about 7.30pm when it broke down.

The driver pulled it on to the side of the road that leads to Foston, about 50 yards from the A64, while she went for assistance.

At 8.45pm a passing motorist reported seeing the vehicle on fire. Firefighters attended, but the car was burned out.

Police are appealing for witnesses, particularly people travelling on the A64, who may have seen something suspicious, to phone 01723 509555.
