THIEVES who set fire to an alarm system and used a crow bar to steal a safe from a North Yorkshire post office at the weekend may have struck before in area, police warned today.

Intruders targeted Marton-Cum-Grafton Post Office, near Harrogate, and made off with an undisclosed amount of money.

Sergeant Derrick Day said an oxyacetylene torch was used to cut out the safe in the raid, which was only discovered when the owners arrived at work today.

"There's a very strong possibility that it is linked with a theft at Bishop Monkton about a month ago," he said.

"That was in similar circumstances, with the alarm overcome by fire and a torch used to cut out the safe.

"In that particular instance they stole a Rover 25 from a garage in the process."

Sgt Day said anyone with information should contact the Harrogate help desk on 01423 539428.
