TRIBUTES were paid today to a loving Selby father and grandfather who has died, aged 73.
Ernie Thompson, of Wavell Street, Selby, began his working life as a trainee projectionist at the Selby Hippodrome. He later joined the Merchant Navy, sailing as first a cabin boy, then a trainee steward, before joining the Royal Navy in 1947.
Mr Thompson was in the Royal Navy until 1954, serving in the Korean War, before moving back to Selby to settle down with his wife, Lilian, who he met in 1951.
He then got a job in the paint shop at BOCM, now known as BOCM Silcock, and stayed there for 31 years.
He is survived by his wife, sons Ernie and Nigel, daughter Janet and grandsons Kevin and Antony.
A funeral service was held at Selby Abbey on Thursday, and Mr Thompson was buried at Selby Cemetery.
