A TEAM from York's National Railway Museum (NRM) has helped stage the first full-scale re-enactment of one of railway's most important races.
The 1829 Rainhill Trials saw Stephenson's Rocket up against Sans Pareil and Novelty.
Rocket came out on top, but in last night's specially-staged adaptation for BBC Timewatch the race was "run" again.
NRM staff Richard Gibbon, Ray Towell and Dave Burrows were instrumental in getting the race on to the rails.
This time the result was closer, with Rocket and Sans Pareil finishing almost neck-and-neck statistics-wise, while Novelty broke down and trailed in third.
A series of events based on the trials is planned for the NRM in February. Phone 01904 621261 for details.
