I WRITE to clarify Mr Gardiner's letter about height requirements to join the police force.
It is a number of years since the minimum height restriction was removed from the entrance requirements for officers. All officers are required to meet exacting health and fitness standards before joining the service.
Regarding police uniform, it is essential that my staff are properly equipped with the uniform and accoutrements to undertake their roles.
The police uniform he refers to is the national police uniform. It was introduced after extensive research into suitability of style to function, as well as to the safety of the officer. Highly visible markings or colourings are an essential part of safety considerations.
There is no longer a ceremonial police uniform. The 'old style' tunics will not be replaced. I am sure no one in the community wishes that I expend resource on a ceremonial uniform for staff when they would only be used occasionally.
Della M Cannings,
Chief Constable,
North Yorkshire Police,
Newby Wiske Hall, Northallerton.
