PUBLIC toilets in York could benefit from one more clean every day to help improve their appearance and combat vandalism.

But there is some doubt if the additional cleaning schedule, which would come at a cost of £15,000 per year, will have any positive affect.

Coun Mark Waudby told a meeting yesterday that a solitary extra clean would not be enough to significantly improve some of the city's worst toilets.

Members of the planning and environment committee heard how high usage toilets such as those in Parliament Street would be targeted under the new budget proposals.

The toilets will be cleaned three times day during the winter and four times a day during the summer if the funding is cleared by the executive.

Meanwhile, councillors also put forward a £21,000 proposal to the executive to help the city deal with annual flooding emergencies. Officers have acknowledged that the current budget of £8,670 is insufficient to meet the growing demands on the council about flooding issues.
