SCORES of junior school pupils will tuck into a hearty, locally-produced breakfast next week at the Great Yorkshire Showground.

The breakfast of bacon and sausage butties will be served up on Monday to children from Woodlands Junior School, Harrogate, to mark the start of Farmhouse Breakfast Week.

The aim of the week is to highlight the importance of the first meal of the day.

But the breakfast will also encourage youngsters to eat food grown and reared on local farms and inform them about one of the best ways of buying local produce, the farmers' markets.

Grant Burton, of Manor House Farm, at Wilberfoss, who is also an Evening Press columnist, will tell how he rears his pigs outdoors, using feed supplied by a local feed merchant from Bubwith, before the animals are slaughtered locally.

Baker Ken Daville, of Daville's Patisserie of Ripon, will bring a sample of flour and wheat seeds to show the children and explain how he makes his bread.

He will bring ready-prepared dough and show the children how to plait dough, and the children will also be given the chance to take part in a plaiting competition.

Members of Ladies In Pigs will be on hand to demonstrate cooking pork products, including the children's bacon and sausage sandwiches.

Meanwhile, organisations interested in getting local and organic food served in local shops, schools, hospitals, cafs, hotels, community centres and other outlets can now visit a new website set up by the Soil Association to find out more.

The site - which is found at www.localfoodworks.org - is the most comprehensive source of information about local food and aims to be a one-stop shop for local food networks.

Visitors can find out about news, events and training opportunities, publications, what's happening in the regions, how to get funding and where to go for business advice.

The site is aimed at schools, local authorities, farmers and growers, researchers, health authorities, voluntary and community organisations, and bodies that are already involved in local food networks.
