AN HISTORIC York pub had a lucky escape today when two out-of-control cars came to halt only centimetres from it.
The vehicles mounted the path outside The Swan, in Bishopthorpe Road.
But they stopped moments before colliding with the pub, leaving only superficial damage.
One of the cars hit a traffic sign, which broke one of the pub's windows and caused minor damage to the entrance.
Landlord Peter McNichol said: "I was on the phone upstairs and heard this crunch. I came down and saw this. There are a couple of windows smashed but it's only superficial, which is very lucky."
He said it seemed the two cars had collided at the junction of Bishopthorpe Road and Prices Lane.
A police spokeswoman said: "The landlady of the pub rang saying a car had run into the pub and had caused damage to the entranceway. We do not yet know what caused the accident."
The accident happened shortly before 11am. The pub was closed at the time.
