York's schools prepared for this Saturday's cross-country county championships with a friendly match against East Riding Schools at Beverley.
York had a good start with Lauren Mason running a well judged race to win the Inter Girls race - her first victory in cross country. She just managed to hold off the fast finishing Katie Mellor. York's other individual winner was Sam Bradley (Archbishop's) in the Year 7 Boys race.
A number of runners were having their first competitive race in this fixture and among the most improved runners were Emma Willits (Fulford), Jennifer Welsh (J Rowntree), Jodie Spencer (Millthorpe) and Josh Cust ( St Olave's).

Four City boys' teams are due to be in action on Saturday - the Under-11s and U13s at home to Wakefield and the U14s and U15s at Bradford.

Last week's U11 match v Hull and U12 tie v Nottingham were both called off due to unfit pitches. The U12 match has been rearranged for February 8.
The U11 squad are to meet on Saturday, January 18, at 8.30am, at Macdonalds on the A64.
The U11s beat a Ryedale Junior League representative team 4-0 with goals from Tom Corner (2), Joe Fox and Marco Shepherd.
All but one of the goals were scored in the first half and though Ryedale improved after the interval, York were indebted to the work of a solid back four consisting of Mike Lawrenson, Ryan Qualter, Joel Dixon and Joe Dale.
Victory was sealed by a spot-kick from Fox.
York will look to continue their undefeated away record in the second round of the Yorkshire Cup this Saturday.
Netball
The three County Netball teams resume their fixtures and they play in an end of season tournament at Middlesbrough on Saturday, February 15. The County teams will be selected from the following squads:
