ONE year on from the start of the public inquiry into the controversial proposed Coppergate development, campaigners are calling for "justice to be done."

Three members of the Castle Area Campaign dressed as High Court judges and held court near Clifford's Tower to make their call.

Led by "Mr Justice Clifford Stowers", better known as Keith Davis, campaign members are hoping the inquiry result will throw out the application to build on the land surrounding Clifford's Tower and in Piccadilly.

If the inquiry finds in favour of applicants, Land Securities, then 250,000 square feet of retail space, restaurants, offices, flats, leisure facilities and a multi-storey car park will be built in the area.

Castle Area Campaign spokesman Gordon Campbell-Thomas said: "The campaign has never been opposed to development, what we are opposed to is a shopping area being built in this car park next to Clifford's Tower.

"Piccadilly could be developed, the applicants could still make their money, but we want to see this land dedicated to the people of York as a natural area."

The result of the public inquiry is expected to be released in early March.
