I AGREE with a previous writer who said that Joseph Rowntree will be turning in his grave, particularly when one considers the demise of all the benefits his family had initiated for their workers and pensioners. Examples:
- The convalescent home at Scarborough - sold off.
- New Earswick village - privatised.
- The theatre and library - likewise.
- A three-day advisory seminar for new pensioners at a hotel in Scarborough - now a one day affair.
- The employees' shop - sold off.
- The dining block with all the amenities for staff and pensioners - in the process of being sold off.
- Profit shares for workers - now a monthly bonus provided no time is taken off for whatever reason.
- Christmas vouchers for pensioners - now ended.
I should think the sports facilities and allotments will be next. The gnomes of Vevey probably don't know where Rowntree of York is, and they don't seem to give a damn.
