A YORK gun club may soon be fighting for its existence after its range was threatened by a major city development.

Members of the York RI Rifle and Pistol Club could be left without a place to shoot if the ambitious York Central plans are given the go-ahead.

They fear that the plans, currently being considered by City of York Council, could see the demolition of the gymnasium and rifle range behind York Station.

The site is part of the 80-acre "teardrop" site, which has been highlighted by council chiefs as "the largest single development site we're likely to see in York in our lifetime".

Members fear that the club could fold unless a replacement hall is built before any demolition plans are pushed through.

A letter that has been issued by the club to members states: "Our gymnasium and rifle range... are most likely to be scheduled for demolition.

"The council is asking for comments on proposals and it is most important that the necessity is emphasised of providing replacement facilities of the same high standards and easy availability that we offer."

It goes on: "It is also most important that replacement facilities are completed before demolition is commenced in order that continuity is maintained - a vital requirement during a period of change."

A club spokesman added: "We are unable really to do anything about this, other than make comments as individuals to the authority on the consultation document.

"We are all in this together, with the table tennis, judo and everyone who uses the range and gymnasium.

"It is very well used every night of the week and without a new facility, all the various disciplines will fall apart."
