DISABLED people with severe mobility problems will be offered subsidised taxi fares under a scheme that has won the backing of Hambleton District councillors.
The new scheme will give users in rural wards vouchers up to the value of £60, entitling them to half-price travel, while residents of urban wards could receive up to £30.
The system, which will be in addition to the present concessionary bus pass scheme, is expected to start in April.
The deputy council leader, Coun Arthur Baker, said: "The bus pass scheme has been working successfully for some time now, but we need to ensure that these people are not excluded from concessionary travel.
"This scheme is the starting point from which we can build. Once we have monitored its take-up - after six months - we can see if we need to increase the vouchers."
It follows a council study highlighting the problems certain groups face in using public transport.
