A CLEAN-UP of household rubbish in Harrogate will see more and more of it sent for recycling.
Harrogate Borough Council is planning to start a kerbside recycling paper collection scheme in an effort to reduce the amount of household rubbish going to landfill sites.
The scheme, developed in partnership with Yorwaste and Todd Waste Management Recycling Partnership, will operate for 12 months - from January 27 - in a number of trial areas, including Ripon, much of Harrogate and Boroughbridge.
Coun Les Ellington, cabinet member for environmental health, said: "We aim to recycle about 14 per cent of rubbish collected in 2003/04.
"Currently the figure is seven per cent. So, to boost rates, new schemes are needed. Even if you take only one daily or one weekly paper or magazine, I think residents will be amazed at how much this adds up to."
Newspapers and magazines will be collected through a reusable plastic sack every 14 days. Residents will be asked to stack the sack at the boundary of their houses close to the pavement.
The scheme will not affect existing community schemes, such as those being run by local scout or community groups.
