AS CHIEF executive of one of the country's largest agricultural organisations, Nigel Pulling is all in favour of promoting great local food.

Since joining the Yorkshire Agricultural Society 18 months ago, he has spearheaded a number of initiatives to advance agriculture and the county's rural economy, as well as working towards the Great Yorkshire Show each year.

His support of the Evening Press's Eat Local Campaign should therefore come as no surprise.

But mere lip service it isn't. He's acutely aware of the need to involve the community as a whole to aid rural regeneration, and his support is as "grass-roots" as it gets.

"Supporting the farming industry is something the whole of society can get involved in," he said. "It's an important element in generating income for local producers and we at the YAS are delighted to support this campaign.

"I'm sure there are dozens upon dozens of food champions who all help raise the profile of our region's food.

"This campaign will highlight the best of the best and I would urge everyone to send their nominations in."

Although many will recognise the YAS in its role of running, promoting and hosting the Great Yorkshire Show, the society is committed to supporting local food production and producers as an essential part of the rural economy.

Its role makes the society an obvious choice to sponsor our campaign and the competition at its heart, which aims to identify the very best of local producers and suppliers.
