NORTH Yorkshire council workers and North Yorkshire police are being given the chance to learn how to communicate with the deaf more effectively.

Workers at Ryedale District Council are being offered the sign language classes at the council officers in Malton after work.

The offer has also been extended to other key local organisations, including Yorkshire Housing and North Yorkshire Police.

The classes are a project between Ryedale District Council and Central Ryedale Community Education.

Those on the course will get the chance to take the stage one qualification.

Customer support manager at Ryedale District Council, Mandy Lightfoot, said: "As an authority we were keen to encourage staff to take this course and although there is a evening class held at Norton College, we felt staff would be more willing to attend after work.

"If this pilot is successful we may run the class next year, again in partnership with Central Ryedale Community Education"

Libby Pearson, from Central Ryedale Community Education, said: "This project proves that learning does not have to take place in a traditional environment at an inconvenient time of day, but can be flexible and tailored to the needs of the individual."
