J HOLLAND (Letters, October 8) will be pleased to hear that City of York Council does indeed have plans to improve road safety outside Haxby Road Primary School.
The council allocates approximately £500,000 every year for traffic calming and safe routes measures for York schoolchildren. Haxby Road Primary School is part of an on-going programme of school safety zones, which will see every York primary school with the need having a safety zone installed.
Following consultation with residents, local businesses and emergency services, Haxby Road Primary School should have a 20mph safety zone installed by April 2003. This will consist of a raised speed table, speed cushions and 20mph "gateway" signing.
