CONCORDE flew into Knavesmire today as York Racecourse celebrated "landing" a major sponsorship deal.

British Airways Travel Shop is sponsoring today's racing at York, bringing another prestigious brand to the city, said marketing manager James Brennan.

A group of stewardesses brought four-foot-long models of Concorde and a Boeing 707 to the racecourse to celebrate the company's new association.

Mr Brennan said crowds for the first day of the racecourse's last meeting of the year, were eight per cent up on last year.

He added that a bumper crowd could be in prospect for the final two days, if the mild autumn weather continued.

"This is significant when firms likes this want to be part of the environment here," Mr Brennan said.

"Yesterday was another good day of racing, with Kevin Darley, of Sheriff Hutton, getting a century of winners. We are hoping for another good two days of racing."
