A NEW family car is believed to have burst into flames, causing extensive damage to the owners' garage and house.

A couple and their two young daughters were in the living room of their home in The Village, Stockton-on-the-Forest, when the fire started in the adjoining garage just before 7.20pm last night.

The fire knocked out the electrics, alerting the family to the blaze.

They escaped from the house via their back door and were waiting outside when fire crews arrived just minutes later. As the flames were starting to spread to the bedroom above the garage, firefighters forced open the front door of the property and made their way upstairs to prevent further damage.

The garage was gutted by the blaze.

There was smoke damage to the bedroom above and light smoke damage in the rest of the house.

Vauxhall spokesman Robin Bartlett said the company would investigate further when it received the incident report.
