ONE of York's best known pubs is to close its doors - in a move which has caught campaigners by surprise.

The Gimcrack, in Fulford Road, will shut "imminently" because it does not fit the "commercial strategy" for brewery Tom Cobleigh.

A spokeswoman for the brewery said it did not have a date for when the pub would shut, but did not deny suggestions circulating locally that it could be closed as early as tonight.

The news has angered campaigners, who only recently celebrated saving the pub from being converted into houses.

They plan to meet on the pub's last day to demand a meeting with the owners to talk about their plans for the building and the grounds.

In April, plans to tear down the building and replace it with 19 new homes were withdrawn by Cleckheaton-based Jones Homes.

Campaigner Andy D'Agorne said many people were shocked by news of the Gimcrack's closure.

He said that campaigners had sent a letter to the brewery, following the failure of the houses plan, to find new ways of promoting the pub. He said they did not receive a reply.

A statement from Tom Cobleigh head office said: "We are sad to confirm the imminent closure of the Gimcrack.

"Despite every effort on the part of Tom Cobleigh management and the dedicated team at the site the board have reached the difficult decision that the house does not fit the commercial strategy for the group.

"Where possible, staff will be offered alternative positions within the company. We extend our thanks to customers who have supported the Gimcrack and look forward to welcoming them to other Tom Cobleigh houses in the area."

Mr D'Agorne said: "People will be very shocked. Obviously people have known for some time that they (the brewery) has not made much of an effort to promote the Gimcrack in any way.

"Inevitably trade had dropped off a bit but in terms of facilities and potential, it is a valuable community resource.

"There will be concern about what happens to it, when a planning application is put forward."
