Selby Warriors got their Yorkshire League division two campaign off to a great start with a 64-20 hammering of Ackworth.

Former York Wasps centre Shaun Austerfield was again the star man with three tries and a hand in most of the others, but it was young full-back Danny Fox who took the man of the match accolades after a personal tally of 28 points, which included a hat-trick of his own.

Austerfield's ball distribution was top-drawer and he received fine support from all the backs, especially scrum-half Wayne Fennell, Carl Bardouskas and Fox. The forwards, too, did a fine job to contain their rivals.

The Warriors were 22-0 up inside 30 minutes, with Ackworth getting a converted try before the break in consolation.

Selby's second-half support play was outstanding and they scored some breathtaking tries.

Ackworth, who were in the premier division not long ago, notched a couple more of their own to show they are not as bad a team as the scoreline suggests - they just caught the Warriors on the wrong day.

Other Selby try scorers were Fennell, Colin Barker (2), Fox, captain Sean Barker and Craig Daltry, while Fox booted eight goals to take his personal tally to 28 points.

The match was sponsored by Featherstone Rovers. All Selby players are asked to attend training tonight and Thursday (7-8.30pm).

New Earswick All Blacks got off the mark in Yorkshire League division one with an excellent 36-4 win over Pudsey at White Rose Avenue.

All Blacks were quickly into a 10-0 lead thanks to two tries from Nigel Tyreman, the first from an Aidy Robinson kick and the second from a Pete Johnson off-load close to the line.

Pudsey replied with an unconverted try before man-of-the-match John Leach gave All Blacks a 16-4 half-time lead.

Steve Perkins extended the hosts' advantage early in the second half after finishing off a good run by Jez Petch, and Jon Paul Wong managed to evade four tacklers before putting Dean Thomas over.

Perkins rounded off a fine debut with a 70-yard run from an excellent Jo Hnesh pass, and All Blacks' scoring was completed by Steve Harris after good work from Leach and Thomas. Jamie Daniel kicked four conversions.

Heworth 'A' were made to pay for too many elementary mistakes when they lost 36-24 at home to Garforth in Yorkshire League division three.

The visitors took an early lead which was soon cancelled out as Heworth pressed forward and scored to go in front, a lead they were to keep until the 65th-minute when careless play and tiredness enabled the visitors to take control.

Kevin Gott tackled superbly throughout, while Heworth's tries came from Mercer (2), Rothwell, Murphy and Hammerton, with Matt Corr adding two goals.

York Acorn 'A' found their Castleford counterparts too hot to handle in Yorkshire League division two and were well beaten 48-2.

Despite the scoreline, Acorn were still well served by loose-forward Dave Murray and second rowers Ken Forbes and Alex Cowton, while winger Andy Littlewood put in several big hits.

Acorn's points came from a Stephen Waldron goal.

The Yorkshire League have again renamed its divisions, with the premier division now being followed by the senior division and then divisions one, two and three.

Heworth Under-16s opened their season with a fine 17-8 win over Elland.

The visitors began with two early tries, but Heworth hit back with a Sean Coulson penalty and a Marcus Allan try after a good attack up the right.

Heworth skipper Liam Stagnell dictated play after the break and the impressive Matt Derry put the Villagers in front. Coulson added a goal before Allan ghosted in for his second try.

Coulson kicked a drop goal to round off a game in which debutant Liam Watling and Andy Hall were superb.

New Earswick All Blacks U15s began life in the top division with a 20-18 win at Featherstone Lions.

All Blacks started well and took a deserved lead but lost the plot midway through the half to trail 8-6 before regaining the initiative with two quick-fire tries.

Featherstone hit back after the restart to go 18-16 up but Ross Divorty scored the winning try for All Blacks in the corner.

The other All Blacks' try-scorers were Danny Pfluger, Chris Pallister and Paul Thompson, Liam Gargan and Thompson kicking goals.

New Earswick All Blacks U12s began their season with a good 20-4 victory over a determined Doncaster Toll Bar.

Harry Cousins got a hat-trick, while other tries came from Adam Caddie and Steve Gardner.

League debutant Brad Swainston was man of the match, while Daryl Davison was the top tackler.
