Other design companies will be green-eyed over the effective simplicity of the I-idea carried out for the University of York by Northcross, the £5.5 million design firm based across the way at the York Science Park.

The massive green information symbol was Northcross's answer to developing the strong identity of the information centre at the main campus building, where it can be seen through the glass edifice.

So there is no mistaking where to go to get your questions answered on subjects like accommodation and events bookings.

Smaller, but similarly striking, Is are springing up at other smaller information points across the campus, and the design will soon be seen in the university's new bioscience building.

It is part of a greater "new look" designed last year by the Northcross team with the university to give greater impact to all the signage, display panels, furnishings and interior design in the main reception area. Also featured there is a display panel in the corporate blue of the university's logo, plus green and lilac to blend with the furnishing.

Nick Townend, managing director of the York division of Northcross, said: "This has proved an exciting project for us as it involves applying commercial interior and identity design practice in a fascinating educational environment. Essentially, our approach has been to treat all users of the information service as customers."
