A NEW campaign to tempt tourists into York will start with "a Rocket" when flamboyant entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson rides George Stephenson's ancient locomotive into the National Railway Museum.

He will be closely followed on the replica of the Rocket by one of his brand new Virgin Voyager trains, and will come face to face with George Stephenson, or at least an actor who looks very like him, when the trains halt at the museum on Monday, October 7.

Sir Richard is helping launch the Stay Just a Little Bit Longer campaign, which offers visitors to York who stay for three nights up to 50 per cent off hotel, caf, restaurant and tourist attraction prices.

Gillian Cruddas, chief executive of York Tourism Bureau, said: "We're

delighted that Sir Richard Branson has added his support to York's

exciting new short-break campaign. We will be specifically targeting

visitors from the Midlands, the south-east, London and Scotland,

persuading them to stay longer in the city. There is so much to see and do in York that a two-night stay is simply not enough, so by staying for three nights we hope our visitors will see much more."

The Stay Just a Little Bit Longer offer is available from November 1.
