HENRY Candy, on the mark at Ayr on Saturday with Airwave, can add to his score at Beverley tomorrow, courtesy of nap selection Catmint in the Betfair.com Novice Stakes.

Candy, who is based at Kingston Warren in Oxfordshire, is significantly selective about the horses he sends north.

His most notable raid this summer was on York's Ebor meeting last month, when he won the Nunthorpe Stakes with his top-notch sprinter Kyllachy.

Catmint has already had one triumph in Yorkshire, at Ripon last month when the juvenile made all the running and scored readily in the hands of Chris Rutter, who takes the mount again tomorrow.

A speedy youngster, Catmint will be hard to catch in this five-furlongs dash.

The Violet and Eddie Smith Conditions Stakes, the feature race on the card, is also over five furlongs.

Candy and Rutter have chances with Follow Flanders, but the vote goes to Smart Predator, winner of the corresponding race 12 months ago for trainer John Quinn.

Settrington-based Quinn has had a frustrating season with Smart Predator this year, but the six-year-old ran well enough over six furlongs at York two outings ago to suggest he can get back on the winning trail here under Robert Winston.

Quinn, incidentally, has his horses in fine form, having followed up a recent Musselburgh double with a win with Eiger at Catterick on Saturday.

In the Maclean And Appleton Handicap (Division Two), Parting Shot is a hopeful selection.

'Hopeful', because Tim Easterby's gelding is a hold-up performer, who needs plenty of luck in running to see him home in front. Runner-up here last week, and a previous course-and-distance winner, he is capable of going one better, provided things pan out right for him.

In the Brian Merrington Memorial Handicap, Eton looks sure to have plenty of supporters.

The six-year-old landed a gamble at Pontefract last week and, because that win was gained in an apprentices' race, he escapes a penalty tomorrow.

Furthermore, Eton represents trainer David Nicholls, on a high after winning his third Ayr Gold Cup on Saturday with Funfair Wane.

Tomorrow's Newmarket meeting is a very low-key affair, but two horses worth looking out for are the promising St Andrews (2-10) and the consistent Melrose Place (4-40).
