RESPONDING to another strong recommendation, we found ourselves at Rudding Park one bright afternoon. South of Harrogate, this is an hotel, conference centre, golf course and brasserie.

It was shortly after 2pm when we walked in. Looking at the brasserie, some 100 feet long, polished wooden floor, maroon decor and the uniformed staff, alarm bells rang. However, we were committed!

We chose to sit on a comfortable settee rather than on hard chairs or impractical looking stools. Ann had to resort to a cardigan because the air conditioning was so powerful.

A smart menu was produced. My early fears were realised. Even the starters were beyond our budget and a main course would have written us off for a month. Nonetheless, I am sure grouse or partridge would have made a luxury change.

So we were left with a choice of omelettes at £5.25 or sandwiches.

Ann did not fancy egg mayonnaise with watercress (£3.95), Thai spicy chicken (£4.75) or smoked salmon with dill (£4.95). That left prawns and avocado, which she ordered in ciabatta. Not a good choice because it was low in avocado and she didn't think much of the bread.

I have to say that the roast rib eye of beef in wholemeal bread was superb. The sandwich was thick with meat and the beef melted in my mouth. But given the standard of service, the linen napkins and general ambience, I was surprised the crusts had not been removed from the bread.

Our plates were garnished with drizzled designer lettuce. In addition there were potato crisps, possibly home made but quite without flavour.

Our bill came to £8.45 which was not unreasonable had we both been satisfied. Ann is not often completely disappointed in our ventures but this was one such occasion.

However, if you are prepared to indulge yourself and are not operating on a tight budget this venue could just be the luxury you are seeking.
