A LARGE barn was gutted and two sugar beet harvesting machines were destroyed in a fire that raged for several hours.
Fire crews from York, Selby, and Tadcaster fought the blaze at Stillingfleet House Farm, in York Road, Stillingfleet, yesterday.
The 60m by 15m barn, which also contained 100 tonnes of straw, was well alight when firefighters arrived just before 1pm.
A North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue spokesman said firefighters allowed the fire to burn out under supervision while protecting surrounding buildings with water screens.
It is believed that the fire was started by an electrical fault.
It was more than six hours later before the fire crews left the farm, belonging to farmer David Atkinson.
They plan to return today to "damp down" any remaining hot spots.
