A 75-YEAR-OLD woman was left with head and leg injuries after she was the victim of a daylight mugging in a York suburb.

Police said the woman was walking along an alleyway, next to East Parade, Heworth, when she was approached from behind by the mugger.

A shopping bag containing a purse and a small amount of cash was taken.

Sergeant Colin Ventress said: "He pushed her from behind and she fell to the floor, then he snatched the lady's shopping bag.

"Several people from nearby shops assisted the lady, and it is possible there were other witnesses."

The mugger was said to be white, aged 20 to 25, of average build with dark hair and wearing dark clothing. He may have had a plump face.

The incident happened at about 1.30pm yesterday. Anyone with information is asked to phone the police on 01904 631321.
