DINERS are sampling new varieties of fruit and vegetables as part of a pioneering project to create new markets for local growers.

Yellow cherry tomatoes and purple cauliflowers are just two of the innovative crops which have been trialled by some of Yorkshire's top restaurant chefs.

If they prove a hit with diners, the crops could provide a major boost for local growers.

The project is being run from the Stockbridge Technology Centre, at Cawood, near Selby.

The centre's business manager, Julian Davies, said: "We are trying to stimulate demand for these new crops, which can then be grown on a commercial basis by local producers.

"The same-day delivery service also ensures that diners will be eating the freshest ingredients."

John Benson-Smith, former TV celebrity chef and now patron of Hazlewood Castle, near Tadcaster, said: "This is about supporting and cooking with the best local produce."
