MICHAEL Elphick was one of our most distinctive television actors. The rough-and-ready charm, the voice as crunchy as a forest floor and the twinkle in his eye ensured he became a favourite on the box.
The former electrician became a star because he exuded warmth. From the loveable ex-fireman in Boon to the seedy Slater in EastEnders, Michael Elphick brought a rugged humanity to his roles. He was the working man's Oliver Reed, and will be mourned by millions.
