PEOPLE strolling in York city centre were asked to do their bit to save the world today.
Campaigners from York and Ryedale Friends of the Earth set out their stall in Exhibition Square this morning, and its centrepiece was an inflatable Earth, decorated with articles about crisis points around the world.
Guy Wallbanks, co-ordinator, said individuals should not leave everything to the politicians. He and colleagues handed out leaflets giving tips on what people could do themselves. This included action like ensuring good house insulation, avoid using cars as much as possible, checking the ethical policies of your bank, supporting local shops, taking part in recycling waste schemes and joining campaigning groups.
The exhibition was held as politicians prepare for Monday's Earth Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa.
