SAMMY the seal has taken up new residence in the River Nidd.

After spending several months in the weir pool at Linton, the common seal, who was named by the children of Linton on Ouse, has headed up the smaller tributary of the main River Ouse.

He has been seen munching his way through double figure pike and barbel and snacking on some quality chub.

A recent fishery survey in the weir pool at Linton revealed few of the large snappers for which the turbulent waters are famed.

Perhaps his latest jaunt is in a forlorn attempt to return to sea or is he just looking for new pickings. George Jennings reported that Sammy was up and down the Skip Bridge stretch for most of their club match on Sunday.

Not surprisingly weights suffered and Ian Thornton needed just 4lb 8oz of perch and eels for victory.

Most of the other top placed anglers struggled for tiny dace, roach, bleak and chub. Second place went to Phillip Butcher with 3lb 8oz ahead of Ray Peart on 3lb 6oz. G Jennings1lb 4oz; S Fennell 1lb 3oz and R Turpin 1lb 2oz were the only other anglers to reach a pound.

Sammy has also been sighted as far upstream on the Nidd as Cowthorpe where Bradford No 1 Club expressed grave concerns for the venues barbel stocks. The small confines of the Nidd should make Sammy a realistic proposition to capture.

Ricky and Derek East were at it again in the Acomb WMC Club match on the Ouse at Donkey Woods.

Despite plenty of colour in the river it was perch and the odd small roach that made up the bulk of catches. Youth triumphed over experience once again as son Derek got the nod over dad Ricky 4lb 4oz to 2lb 6oz.

There was a tie for third between Keith Day and Geoff Lane who both netted 2lb 3oz.

Bishopthorpe and Acaster Club will be holding their annual Junior All Day Match on the Bridge Field on Wednesday, August 28. The draw will take place on the bank at 9am. Further details can be obtained from Roger Baker on 01904 706895 or from Anglers Corner.
