Fulford Golf Club again proved to the liking of Wakefield Golf Centre's Adrian Ambler.
After retaining the Yorkshire PGA title he also won yesterday's pro-Am with a seven-under-par 65, thereby repeating the double he secured at Fulford last year.
Trailing Ambler by three shots were Malton and Norton's Steve Robinson, Pannal's Dave Padgett and Neil Cheetham (Barlborough Links), the former Heworth professional. They all shot rounds of 68.
Fulford assistant Jamie Ashworth bagged three birdies in successive holes to finish with a 70 and joint sixth place.
Meanwhile, Malton and Norton's Simon Dyson produced a steady opening round on the first day of the Volvo Scandinavian Masters in Sweden. Dyson posted an even par 71 to trail leader Irishman Graeme McDowell by seven shots.
York professional Kirsty Taylor was lying in second place, two shots off the lead, in the Evian European Tour Norwegian Masters in Oslo after a four-under-par round of 68.
Fulford's James Mason lost to D Berry (West Bradford) in the fourth round of the English Amateur Championship at Walton Heath by two holes.
Fraser Kelley (Ganton) beat C McDonnell (Stocksfield) by two holes but went out in the fifth round when he lost to R Steele (Kenilworth) 4 and 3.
