THE 35th City of York Open Bowls Tournament got off to a brilliant start in blistering weather.
Last year's mixed pairs winner Gary Bunce had to team up with Joan Parker (Minster Ladies) as his original partner, Anee Illingworth was ill.
The Bunce-Parker combination lost in the second round to Tony and Val Thornton, who went on to reach the last sixteen.
The 1999 winners, Iain Boyle and Shiley Stacey also reached the last sixteen after squeezing past Gordon and Pat Storey 18-15.
Mother and son duo Rosemary and Stuart Bryan were knocked out in the secone round by a Hull pairing. Stuart Bryan will be hoping for better luck when he defencds his singles title later in the week.
The mixed pairs continues today with the men's pairs starting at 5pm.
The tournament was opened by the Lord Mayor of York, Coun David Horton, who sent down the first wood the at Clarence Gardens green.
The tournament finished on Saturday, August 3.
Matches are being staged at Clarence Gardens, West Bank park and Glen Gardens.
